I'm Thankful for Disappointment

Ignorant mistakes that were made, people that came into my life only to leave, the times I've fallen, the bad grades I've gotten, and the defeat I've fought off are all things I am extremely thankful for.

If I were to say any of these things at Thanksgiving dinner while everyone is saying what they are thankful for I would get wide-eyed stares. Each one of these remarks is dark and deep but the more I think about it the more I realize how truly thankful I am for every one of my failures. Putting myself in a vulnerable position at the dinner table is definitely not something will be doing but on my blog this is acceptable.

Last night I was making a list of the people I was thankful for with reasons explaining why and I was tempted to write down the names of people that disappointed me. Typically these names are not mentioned on a list of thankfulness but I learned something from every person that left me with an empty feeling when I say their name. I wrote down their names and then I couldn't stop- the list kept growing.

From the person who I had to sit in class with for a whole semester after exposing myself to the person who entered my life when I was vulnerable and wanted to take advantage. As well as the people who made me feel like I had no value and the people who thought I couldn't accomplish my goals. So many people who didn't stick around. So many of them teaching me so many valuable lessons which I am thankful for.

I learned how to deal with being thrown aside for someone better, how to block others negative opinions, when to let go of someone, and how to not go insane thinking about someone. I've even learned how to be friendly with an enemy, deal with people who talk behind your back and handle situations in a calm and respectful manner. All these lessons were learned from people who entered into my life for the wrong reasons.

Letting these kind of people in my life is a mistake until I get the chance to reflect on the things they taught me about humanity and myself. I have made mistakes more than I can count but only a few of those mistakes lead to where I am today.

I am thankful for all these people. That statement feels more real than stating how thankful I am for all the positive impacts people have made on my life. Understanding that a bad situation can lead to a good outcome, feels like a grown up thing to say.

This Thanksgiving I am most thankful for growing and learning from the people that disappointed me.

  2. Wow. This is so powerful. We can learn a lot from people who take advantages of us. We learn what kind of person we don't want to become from them.

  6. THANK YOU FOR THIS. I absolutely love how you took a topic like this and turned it around to mean something so different and valuable. "All these lessons were learned from people who entered into my life for the wrong reasons." <<< TRUTH. If we didn't experience hardships we would never get stronger. THIS IS INSPIRING AND POWERFUL. PREEEEACH.

  7. Being thankful for everyone whether they've done good to you or bad is really something. Because in a way, even those who did hurt you have taught you valuable lessons if you're ready to look at it that way.
    Great post!
